Pandora Hits 10 Billionth 'Thumb' Rating
Pandora received its 10 billionth "thumb" last week.

The thumbs up and down icons on Pandora's streaming Internet radio service help users personalize their radio stations by enabling them to either like or dislike a song that's playing. If the user gives the song a thumbs up, Pandora will try to play more songs with similar qualities, but if they give it a thumbs down, the service will immediately skip the song and try to avoid similar selections.
On Sunday, April 24 at 4:46pm, "Ridin' Solo" by Jason DeRulo received Pandora's 10 billionth thumb—and it was a thumbs up.
"Of the many milestones we've hit over the past 6 years, this is perhaps the one that makes us most proud," Pandora founder Tim Westergren wrote on the company's blog. "We created Pandora to bring personalization to radio, to allow each individual to determine the sound of their stations, and to make it as simple and intuitive as possible. There is no greater evidence for us of meeting that objective than the ongoing engagement you have all shown in your use of the thumbs."
The number of thumbs, both up and down, demonstrates that users are actively participating in the song selection on Pandora, one thumb at a time, the company said.
Founded in 2000, Pandora is powered by the Music Genome Project, an in-depth taxonomy that analyzes hundreds of musical "genes," enabling it to play songs that sound alike. The service now has over 800,000 songs in its collection, and about 95 percent of those are played in a given month.
Most recently, however, Pandora made headlines when Internet security company Veracode conducted an investigation and found that the Pandora Android app is transmitting things like user location, gender, birthday, and postal code information to third-party ad networks.
