Alabama SenateThe Alabama Senate has approved one of Gov. Robert Bentley's campaign promises.
The Senate voted 34-0 late Tuesday night for an administration bill designed to create jobs by bringing back tax breaks that lured Alabama's first auto assembly plant.

The legislation would allow new and expanding industries to keep much of the state income tax withheld from their employees' paychecks. They could use it to recoup the cost of constructing their plants.

Alabama used that tax break to attract the Mercedes plant to Vance in 1993 and then cut off the tax break for any more companies in 1995.
The bill's sponsor, Republican Sen. Phil Williams of Rainbow City, said the amount the company would get to keep depends on the size of the project and the number of jobs.
